Walt Disney World Goofy’s Challenge and www.habitatforhorses.org, by Pam Mowery

For the past 4 years I have run in the Walt Disney World Marathon held each January in Orlando, Florida.
But, this year, on January 10th & 11th I am competing in the Walt Disney World Goofy’s Challenge.

The Challenge consists of running in the ½ marathon on the 10th (13.1 miles) and the full marathon on the 11th (26.2 miles) for a total of 39.3 miles. Initially Each race begins at 6am but you have to be on the last shuttle to the starting line by 4am. It will take me approx 2.25 hours for the ½ marathon and 5 – 5.5 hours for the full marathon. I have a lot of heart, not a lot of speed. My husband was supposed to go and run the full marathon on the 11th, but on November 3rd he had open heart surgery to repair a faulty Mital valve. I was prepared to make the trip and compete alone, but my dear friend since the 7th grade, who now lives in Boise, Idaho stepped up and is flying to Orlando and will run in his place. WOW!
I entered just to see if I could do it. I challenged myself to reach a personal goal. But, my very first marathon back in 1998 was thru Team In Training (TNT) and we raised money for the Leukemia Society. That was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and lead to my love for running. So, I decided to use this race as a way to raise money for my second passion – helping neglected and abused horses. I chose Habitat for Horses, a non-profit equine rescue group located in Hichcock, Texas. I see what amazing things they do for so many starving, abused and neglected horses. They get in the trenches and see things I don’t even want to imagine and give these horses a second chance.
So, I’m asking for donations to be made directly to HfH via their website at www.habitatforhorses.org and that a note simply saying “Goofy Challenge” be added to the information submitted.
